NCWS TOWN HALL MEETING: FG Tasked to Activate Court Ruling & Give Osinachi Justice.

The National Council for Women Societies, NCWS, the umbrella body for women groups in Nigeria have risen from a One Day Town Hall Meeting with a call on the Federal Government to activate the Court Ruling in favour of NIGERIAN Women and to also ensure Osinachi gets justice.

Speaking at the event with theme: Women Together: Setting the Agenda & Changing the Narrative, the newly elected President NCWS, Hajia Lami Adamu Lau, called on the FG and State Governments to respect the Court Ruling on the Gender Bills ” we will not relent in our demands until all the issues in the five rejected Bills are addressed”.

The President NCWS also assured NIGERIANs that ” we will not relent but get to the root of all the circumstances, remote or immediate, that let to the death of the gospel artists Osinachi Nwachukwu. And where culpability is found, we will not rest until justice is meted to all those found guilty.

Thus the new leadership is working on establishing a Counselling Desk at the Secretariat of NCWS with seasoned Counsellors to provide Support to Women in abusive Relationship. We are also opened to partnerships with well intended institutions who will want to be part of this process.

The Wife of the President Federal Republic of Nigeria, Hajia Aisha Buhari, ably represented by Dr Mairo Al-Makura, declared that “it’s a new dawn, women must unite and work together. We must show the men we have capacity and number. If we come together and unite, we will make the difference and desired impact. Let’s stop the pull down Syndrome.”

She also noted that ” the woman should be our political party and focus. Whichever woman scales the Primaries let’s go all out and support them to win irrespective of party divide.”

Earlier in her Speech the former First Lady of Imo State, Dr Nkechi Okorocha, commended the newly elected President NCWS for hitting the ground running just 10 days after being elected. Adding that the theme for the Town Hall Meeting was apt and timely. She also commended the immediate past President and her team.

Dr Okorocha called on NIGERIAN Women wherever they are to sing the song of Peace. And pondered on why the 9th Assembly her husband is part of rejected the Bill. She advised women to “go back to the drawing board and strongly consider the the counsel of Dr Ejike Orji former IPAS Country Director. Adding that Women have what it takes to change the narrative.

Dr Nkechi declared that the 2023 general elections are around the corner, women should be given the chance to play their divine role it will reflect in the family and nation. The leaders we should be seeking for now are not the same we elected in 2003 or 2015. It must be a total shift. We must be intentional and support as many women to emerge. Women must get it right this time.

Earlier in her goodwill message Mrs Moji Makanjuola, former President Nigeria Association of Women Journalists, NAWOJ charged Nigerian Women to resolve to “Support Women irrespective of party. Vote committed women who will associate with us. Such as Dr Nkechi Okorocha, Dr Mairo Al-Makura, Dame Paullen Tallen the Women Affairs Minister.”

Mrs Makanjuola noted that “it is a new dawn and things must happen differently. We will not vote any man who was part of those who threw out our 5 Bills. We want Peace but inclusive Peace. For those women who got there and suddenly forgot they are women we will vote them out too.”

Speaking for the President with Disability, Mrs Lois Aura, the National Secretary declared that “the time has come to work the talk by ensuring that no woman is left behind. She appreciated the organisers for the invite while Congratulating the new president and her team.

The Director General of the National Center for Women Development, NCWD, Dr Asabe Vilita Bashir, said ” Women should be heard and see and that she hoped the One Day Town Hall Meeting Organized by the NCWS will develop a strategic road map going forward for sustainable development.”

Noting that on the part of the NCWD ” we will continue to drive economic Empowerment for women. I Congratulate the newly elected President and the executives.

The Key Note Speaker Country Director Amnesty international Nigeria Osai Ojigho, said she was pleasantly surprised when she received the invite that it is rare to see sister groups invite other sisters.

The Amnesty international Boss noted that it was so sad that despite the fact that Nigeria is part of so many gender protocols when it comes to respecting it Nigeria is found wanting. She said it was heart warming when the ABUJA High Court on April 6th granted women judgement in their favour.

Osai Ojigho, noted that we should not wait for FG, “Nigerian women should start collating data of women who qualify to occupy different positions and encourage same to be appointed as soon as possible.”

Finally she declared that there must be a deliberate action by “reframing our discuss on Human Rights. As Human Rights is Women’s Right and Women’s Right Human Rights” she concluded.
